1 Continuous Access XP for the Array HP StorageWorks Continuous Access XP creates and maintains duplicate copies of user data from a local disk array on a remote disk array. These copies are useful for data duplication, backup, and disaster recovery.
Access XP Async) volume groups at the remote site can be recovered with full update sequence consistency, but data currency might be behind the primary site due to the asynchronous remote copy operations. Continuous Access XP Asynchronous provides update sequence consistency for user-defined groups of volumes (such as large databases) and protection for write-dependent applications if a disaster occurs.
At installation, modes are set to their default values, so discuss these settings with your HP support team. Modes can only be changed by your HP support team representative.
XP, the management station must be LAN attached to the MCU of each Continuous Access XP pair. The MCU communicates with the RCU via dedicated Fibre Channel remote copy connections. The MCU controls host I/O operations to the Continuous Access XP P-VOLs and Continuous Access XP initial copy and remote copy operations between the P-VOLs and S-VOLs.
Only Continuous Access XP Asynchronous pairs belonging to the same CLPR can be allocated to one Continuous Access XP consistency group. For more information about CLPRs, see the HP StorageWorks XP Disk/Cache Partition user guide. Remote copy connections Remote copy connections are physical paths MCUs use to communicate with RCUs.
16 MCU ports. However, the number of logical paths that can be specified does not depend on the number of connectable RCU or MCU ports. HP strongly recommends you establish at least two independent remote copy connections (one per cluster) between each MCU and RCU to provide hardware redundancy for this critical communications path.
Host failover is configured using the host failover software product for the platform (such as Microsoft® Cluster Server or HP Cluster Extension XP), depending on your installation requirements and standards. Command View XP or XP Remote Web Console does not provide host failover functions.
Update copy operations Update copy operations occur when the host issues a write I/O operation to the P-VOL of an established Continuous Access XP pair. Update copy operations duplicate P-VOL write I/Os at the S-VOL to keep the volume pair synchronized. Continuous Access XP provides two modes for update copy operations: synchronous and asynchronous.
• Asynchronous Mode: The MCU completes P-VOL write operations independently of the associated update copy operations at the S-VOL. The RCU manages the S-VOL updates according to recordset information and maintains sequence ordered data consistency for the S-VOLs. If the P-VOL write operation fails, the MCU reports a unit check and does not create the Continuous Access XP asynchronous recordset for this operation.

CAUTION: You may specify the unit of Difference Management when you create a pair with the Paircreate pane (see Creating Continuous Access XP volume pairs (Paircreate)). If XP12000 is connected with XP1024/XP128, the unit of Difference Management is applied as it is when you specify the unit. If XP12000 is connected with XP1024/XP128, the differential data is stored in units of cylinders.
The parameter length and detailed specification of the Continuous Access XP Asynchronous channel command are different than for Continuous Access XP Synchronous RIOs. You must ensure that your channel extenders support this command. For further details, contact your HP account support representative.

The RCU settles the updated records in the recordset as follows: • If the corresponding track is in cache (track-hit), updated records in the recordset are copied to the existing cached track, and cache space for the sidefile is released.
HP Cache LUN XP operations might decrease total amount of cache available for Continuous Access XP Asynchronous operations, but they do not directly affect sidefile cache usage. Available cache is the amount of physical cache memory installed on the disk array minus any cache reserved for the HP Cache LUN XP feature.
Copy pending timeout This group option specifies maximum delay allowed for Continuous Access XP Async copy operations. The RCU suspends all S-VOLs in the group when: • The RCU has not had any communications from the MCU within the specified time. This situation might indicate a disaster or failure at the primary site.

When a Continuous Access XP Sync pair is suspended, the MCU stops performing update copy operations to the S-VOL and may or may not continue accepting write I/Os for the P-VOL, depending on the P-VOL fence level pair option. Configure Fibre Channel ports connected to RCUs as initiator ports. For serial interface configurations, configure serial channel ports connected to RCUs as RCPs. For instructions, see Port change operation. Register the RCUs to the current MCU CU image by using the Add RCU pane. Set the options for the registering RCU by using the RCU Option pane (see Registering RCUs (Add RCU) for instructions).

NOTE: HP recommends Business Copy (BC) intra-disk array copy operations. If BC is not installed, you can use Continuous Access XP to copy within the same local disk array. VMA is set, you can copy the P-VOL's access attribute recorded in the VMA to the S-VOL. You can set the VMA required to copy the access attribute only to OPEN-V volumes. For more information about LUN Security XP Extension, see the HP StorageWorks LUN Security XP Extension user guide.

Figure 16 Copying access attributes As you can see in Figure 16, if both the P-VOL and S-VOL have VMA, the P-VOL's VMA is copied to the S-VOL. In Figure 16, the S-VOL's access attribute is Read/Write when the pair status is SMPL. After the P-VOL's VMA is copied to the S-VOL, the S-VOL's access attribute becomes Read Only, which is the same as the P-VOL's access attribute of the P-VOL.
NOTE: If the pair is suspended or deleted during the COPY status, the P-VOL's access attribute is not copied to the S-VOL. To copy the P-VOL's access attribute to the S-VOL, ensure that the pair status is PAIR, and suspend or delete the pair. NOTE: When the P-VOL is in the COPY or PAIR status, there are two access attributes that can and cannot be changed according to the existing access attribute.

This reduces traffic on the local disk array's internal LAN, so inquiries and commands that the Command View XP management station or XP Remote Web Console issues are processed more quickly. The Continuous Access XP main pane (also known as the Pair Operation pane) is displayed by clicking the Pair Operation tab. This pane shows information for the selected CU image of the connected disk array and provides access to all Continuous Access XP functions. Table 19 shows the Continuous Access XP functions of each tab.

Round Trip Time = Round Trip Time between MCU-RCU x 2 + Initial Copy response time (ms) For the Round Trip Time between the MCU and RCU, contact your carrier or use the ping command and so on to measure the time. If you do not use lines and so on between the MCU and RCU, specify 1. Initial copy response time is the response time required for multiple initial copy operations.
HP representative can also get the RCU S/N and SSIDs using the RCU's service processor (at the remote site). In the RCU Operation pane, click MCU&RCU in the Switch Display box. In the CU number/Port tree, click the correct CU image. For this step, the list can be blank. You must register and add RCUs to each CU image separately.
• Path Watch: Time for monitoring blockade in the Fibre Channel paths on the MCU side Modifying RCU options (Change RCU Option) Use the RCU Options pane to modify RCU options set when you registered the RCU. When the RCU Option pane is opened with the Change RCU Option command, all fields are blank.
Deleting RCUs (Delete RCU) You can delete an RCU from an MCU only after all Continuous Access XP volume pairs between the MCU CU image and RCU CU image are deleted. When you delete an RCU from an MCU, the MCU deletes all logical paths from the current MCU CU image to the selected RCU CU image.

Adding consistency groups (Add CT Group) Use the Add CT Group command to add a consistency group to the connected MCU. When the Add CT Group command is selected, the Add CT Group pane appears. Use the Add CT Group pane to select group options for the group.
NOTE: After being set, options can be modified and canceled (see Modifying parameters and deleting consistency groups). Click Apply on the Continuous Access XP main pane to apply settings to the disk array. When the Add CT Group pane closes, the list changes to the Consistency Group Settings Parameter list.
• Set button: Sets consistency group options. Connect to the MCU. Split all pairs in the group (Pairsplit-r). From the Consistency Group tree, click a consistency group mode that includes the consistency group to be modified. From the Consistency Group list, click the consistency groups to be modified. Select more than one consistency group with MCU in the This CU column.
NOTE: After being set, options can be modified and canceled (see Modifying parameters and deleting consistency groups). Click Apply on the Continuous Access XP main pane to apply the deletion to the disk array. Asynchronous copy option When the Async Option command is selected, the Async Option pane appears. Use the Async Option pane to specify Continuous Access XP asynchronous copy option parameters for the connected disk array.

Modifying parameters After performing the CT Group operation, click a consistency group on the list. To modify parameters for Async Option operation, you do not have to select the row on the list. Right-click, and click Modify. A pane for each operation appears. Modify parameters, and click Set.
Stopping remote copy usage monitoring Click the Usage Monitor tab. Click Stop in the Operation drop-down list. Click Apply. A confirmation dialog box appears. Click OK to confirm. The Status field changes from Running to Stop. Click Cancel to cancel settings. Displaying usage monitor graph When usage monitoring is running, use the Usage Monitor tab to display user-selected remote copy I/O statistics in real time.

NOTE: When you click Normal Size, the host group name or iSCSI target name (up to 8 characters) appears at the top of the graph. To check the host group name or iSCSI target name, enlarge the graph. If the port is connected to an iSCSI target, the iSCSI target name appears, up to 32 characters, even if you magnify the graph.

Common procedure for Continuous Access XP pair operations Use the Continuous Access XP main pane to perform pair setting operations. All operations performed from the Continuous Access XP main pane have the following common procedure: Click a CU number in the CU Number/Port Number tree. NOTE: You must select a CU number in the tree.
Modifying LU parameters Click the LU on the Pair Settings Parameter list. Right-click, and click Modify. A pane appears. Modify parameters, and click Set. Click Apply on the Continuous Access XP main pane to apply modifications. Deleting LUs Click the LUs on the Pair Settings Parameter list. Right-click, and click Omit.

Right-click, click Paircreate, and click the pair mode (Synchronous or Asynchronous). The Paircreate pane appears. Pair mode specifies the update copy mode (see Update copy operations) for new pairs: Synchronous or Asynchronous. The mode selected has the greatest impact on performance and must be considered carefully.
• Priority: Priority (scheduling order) of initial copy operations. • Diff: In the measurement of the Cylinder or the Track, Continuous Access XP manages differentials among data. • CTG: Consistency group used for pair created (Asynchronous pairs only). • ErrLvl: Error level, Group or LU. When a failure occurs, pairs in the same group or in an LU are suspended (Asynchronous pairs only).
Priority P-VOL of pair The MCU starts initial copy operations for LUNs 03, 05, 00, and 04 immediately, starts LUN 01 when one of the first four initial copy operations LUN 03 is complete, and starts LUN 02 when the next initial copy operation is complete.

• Pending Update: Drain: The MCU changes the Continuous Access XP Async pair status from Suspending to PSUS only after the RCU accepts the pairsplit operation and completes the following steps: Finishes settling all pending recordsets for the pair. Completes negotiation with all MCUs (report ready-for-suspension to all MCUs and receive acknowledgements) without further recordsets generated.
From the Continuous Access XP main pane, verify that Continuous Access XP pairs are displayed correctly (PSUS status) in the Volume list. Use the Pairresync command (see Resuming Continuous Access XP volume pairs (Pairresync)) to resync split Continuous Access XP volume pairs. CAUTION: If a timeout error occurs when the Use Time-Saving Mode option is selected, access the Continuous Access XP main pane, and confirm the volumes on which the pairsplit-r operation could not be performed.

NOTE: If you select a pair from the volume list and change the settings, and then use a drop-down list to set a parameter to blanks, the parameter takes the default value for each pair. If you select settings from the Preset list before applying the changed settings, and then use a drop-down list to set a parameter to blanks in the Pairresync pane, the parameter value in the Preset list does not change.
